Mirrors was founded by two Ohio State University women who, in the early hours of one morning, saw the reflection of torches on the water of Mirror Lake. Inspired by this sight, they named their organization Mirrors and established as its motto “The reflection of what we have done — the image to which we aspire.” Each year, Mirrors holds the Angel Ball to benefit the James Cancer Research Hospital at OSU, for which many fundraisers are held throughout the year. Aside from the Angel Ball, Mirrors participates in many service projects for the university and its community, oftentimes involving volunteer work at the James.
(slightly embellished by 2001-02 President Frank Sasso)
One cool, damp evening in late May, the acting Mirrors president and the Mirrors president-elect arrived at the West Campus lot in order to drop off the president-elect’s 1994 Ford Tempo. After a bit of persuasion, the president-elect was able to convince the Mirrors president that they should walk home, citing the loveliness of the evening. Just as they were about to exit the parking lot, one of them noticed a dollar bill on the ground. Perhaps they are wonderful people, or perhaps they simply didn’t want a wet dollar in their pockets, but regardless, the president-elect proceeded to slide the dollar into the card reader which opens the gate to the lot. The thought was that the next person to drive through would unexpectedly find a dollar, thus making his or her day that much brighter. The current Mirrors president said, “That was really kind,” and with that, the RAK chair was born. The Mirrors Random Act Of Kindness chair is responsible for doing random kind things to make all of our lives that much brighter.
